What does insurance cover at alcoholism rehab centers?

Alcohol addiction treatment programs can be rather expensive.

However, the cost of addiction can be even worse.

Fortunately, many Americans won’t have to pay out of their own pockets for addiction treatment.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, most health insurance policies will offer some coverage for addiction treatment. Alcohol abusers often won’t pay a cent towards addiction treatment.

So, what does insurance cover at alcohol rehab centers? Does it cover the cost of drug and alcohol treatments?

Are the same insurances accepted at each alcohol and drug rehab center.

Let’s take a look.

Does Insurance Cover Inpatient or Outpatient Treatment?

Does insurance coverage pay for inpatient treatment or outpatient treatment?

There’s no clear answer for this. This is because everyone’s health insurance coverage will vary.

In most cases, you can expect your private insurance to cover some of the rehab costs. This is because addiction is considered as a chronic mental disease.

The insurance policy will pay for both alcohol and drug addiction treatment at certain recovery centers.

With that said, the amount of coverage that is offered will vary. While some policies will pay for all of the inpatient alcohol treatment costs. Others may only cover a portion of the cost.

Some health insurance policies will also cover any type of alcohol or drug detox. It doesn’t matter which prescription drugs you take.

Others are a bit more picky.

It’s difficult to figure out what your insurance plan covers without the help of the admissions team. These specialists will help you figure out the amount of coverage you have.

It’s also important to note that not all top rated alcohol rehab centers accept the same health insurance plans. Some alcohol treatment centers only accept insurance plans from certain companies.

How Much Does Addiction Treatment Cost?

The cost of alcohol treatment will vary significantly.

It depends on the type of alcohol rehab program you choose, the quality of the treatment centers, the type of medications used in addiction treatment, your city and more.

There’s no clear answer.

The cost of alcohol abuse treatment will also vary depending on the length and severity of the addiction. It’ll also depend on the amenities and services offered at the rehab centers.

It’s hard to estimate how much the alcohol addiction treatment will cost.

With that said, the National Institute on Drug Abuse has come up with some “ballpark estimates”. Typical costs are:

  • Up to $500 a day for medically-assisted detox. Alcohol detox usually lasts anywhere from 3 to 14 days.
  • Approximately $10,000 for outpatient treatment. Outpatient alcohol treatment programs can last months.
  • Anywhere from $8,000 to $32,000 a month for inpatient treatment. The cost will vary depending on the services offered at each residential program.
  • Up to $80,000 a month for luxury addiction treatment programs.

In general, outpatient care is significantly cheaper than inpatient alcohol treatment. Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are more expensive than standard outpatient treatment programs.

What your insurance will cover will depend on your policy.

Some policies will cover most of the rehab costs. Others may place restrictions on the type of addiction rehab that substance abusers can receive.

Some private insurances will require a note from medical professionals. Most insurance policies will only cover evidence-based treatments.

It’s also important to note that the cost of rehab will also increase significantly for those struggling with co-occurring disorders. The dual diagnosis treatment will need to treat both substance abuse and mental health disorders.

The type of behavioral therapy that patients subscribe to may also affect the overall cost. Common therapy options include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET).

What If You Don’t Have Any Insurance Coverage?

If you don’t have any health insurance at all, there are many other payment options to consider.

Alcoholics and drug addicts can consider looking for state-funded or government-funded alcohol treatment and rehab programs. These programs are either low-cost or free.

Your employer’s insurance may also offer coverage for alcohol or drug addiction treatment. The treatment options that are covered may be limited; however, it’s better than nothing.

Some alcohol rehab centers will offer payment plans. Patients can pay in small increments each month.

These payment plans will allow those struggling with alcoholism to start treatment as soon as possible at top rated drug and alcohol rehab centers.
